DEEP Clearing House

Copenhagen, Denmark - From June 17 to 20, 2024, the Royal Danish Defence College hosted the 13th Clearing House on Defence Education in a hybrid format, blending online participation with in-person sessions in Copenhagen, Denmark. Since its inception in 2012, the Clearing House process has been instrumental in coordinating support among Allies and Partners, facilitating the alignment of defence education needs with available resources from Professional Military Education (PME) institutions. The Clearing House gained visibility following the NATO Wales Summit in 2014, was strengthened at the Warsaw Summit in 2016, and has been actively pursued through the NATO Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) to promote and support cooperative security measures.

This year’s event saw the participation of 126 representatives from 52 defence education institutions from 26 Allied and Partner nations both in-person and via online services. The NATO DEEP Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Portal, enhanced with its own video conferencing capabilities, facilitated the hybrid sessions of this year’s Clearing House. Furthermore, this shift to online meetings and workshops has increased the efficiency and accessibility of PME, allowing for continued progress in faculty and curriculum development. This digital approach underscores NATO’s commitment to maintaining momentum and fostering intellectual interoperability among its members and partners.

Key outcomes included the expansion of digital learning platforms and the integration of lessons from recent global conflicts into curricula. Looking ahead, NATO aims to further develop advanced faculty programs, increase the accessibility and quality of online education, and continue fostering intellectual interoperability among member nations. The addition of new partners like Kuwait and Argentina highlights the growing global interest in NATO’s educational initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and adaptation in defence education to meet evolving security challenges.
