For the more than 250 partner institutions involved in RSSEE, regional stability in the Western Balkans means to strive for comprehensive and cooperative political, economic, cultural, and civil/military relations in areas that have passed through wars and where the political and interethnic relations are still partly characterized by conflict and/or security problems due to differing geo-strategic interests of regional or global actors.

The Southern Caucasus has always been an area of concern for Euro-Atlantic Security. The decision has been taken to build upon the legacy of previous PfP C study groups focusing on the wider region to focus exclusively on the South Caucasus. Embedded in the wider academic framework of both the PfP Consortium as well as the security-political research in the Austrian Ministry of Defence and Sports, the group's main focus is to identify drivers of tension and propose possible solutions to local authorities and international actors alike.

Military historians as well as experts on foreign affairs from participating nations come together to share ideas concerning important events, and to gain an appreciation of differences in national perspectives with respect to them. This open sharing of opinion and historical research assists the different nations in building trust and moving away from confrontation and toward a lasting peace and stability.
