Geneva, Switzerland (December 17, 2015) - Security sector reform (SSR) is an increasingly important topic on the agenda of international development, and peace and security communities. SSR opens a window of possibility to transform security policies and institutions, and provides opportunities to integrate gender issues.  The Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF)'s recent publishing of a Gender and Security Sector Reform Toolkit in Spanish greatly increases the reach of this important toolkit.

This paper contains policy recommendations that were developed as a follow-up to the July 2015 Foreign Terrorist Fighters Challenges & Responses Tabletop Exercise that was conducted by the PfPC's Combating Terrorism Working Group at the George C. Marshall Center in Garmisch-Parkenkirchen, Germany.

This policy paper was produced following the the Regional Stability in South East Europe (RSSEE) Workshop on “Countering Violent Extremism in the Western Balkans,” held from 27 to 29 September 2015. The workshop, organized in cooperation with Austria’s National Defense Academy and the Belgrade Center for Security Policy, analyzed violent extremism in the region in order to produce policy recommendations on how to address violent extremism via a regional, transnational and comprehensive approach.

Doha, Qatar (November 2, 2015) – Perhaps now more than ever, international security depends on closer cooperation between Western and Arab nations. Kiev, Ukraine (28 October, 2015) - Real-world lessons from military operations in Eastern Ukraine are an important driver of the military education system in Ukraine. This was the topic of a conference held 26-28 October at the National Defense University of Ukraine, organized under the Defense Education Enhancement Program (DEEP).

Ankara, Turkey (October 19, 2015) – As participants were preparing for a NATO Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism (COE-DAT) conference held from 13-15 October in Ankara, they could not have imagined the tragic terrorist attack that would darken the city on 10 October, killing approximately 100, and injuring almost 300. The COE-DAT conference was a somber reminder of the need for nations to unite in the fight against violent extremism.
